porphyria’s slumber
Cupboard Love, The Sydney Fringe and PACT centre for emerging artists presents
Porphyria’s Slumber
A self-devised solo performance by Annabelle McMillan
“Trapped between earth and sky; the floor invites prostration; vegetables are prepared and shared and, at the end, an umbrella will not take flight, leaving McMillan huffing and puffing.” – Keith Gallasch, RealTime Arts
“Like Browning, Annabelle attempts to challenge our perception of sensuality, materialism and the hopelessness of the human condition… there are a few laughs, a little sexual innuendo and a whole lotta quirky.” – Erin Wright, Sydney Fringe Blog
“She was lost and determined and hopeful all at once…she highlighted the hopelessness and deterioration of society in a very, very unique way.” – Lana Hilton, What’s On Sydney
Porphyria wakes up to find herself in a timeless, placeless abyss, with object and people she does not recognise. There is a strange machine with one button, books that speak, and thousands of young women who have stolen her identity. Here, she can play, explore, and learn… and perhaps, remember what it is that she’s forgotten…
Combining physical theatre, film, puppetry, and audience interaction, the devised debut of Annabelle McMillan is whimsical, violent, and always surprising.
